THE NATURAL WORLD
These are a set of my first natural world images, I found it quite hard because we live in an urbanised area so there aren't as much natural world around. I've tried to get pictures of natural everyday things like trees, bushes and even sunlight.
Harry Callahan
"The difference between the casual impression and the intensified image is about as great as that separating the average business letter from a poem. If you choose your subject selective -intuitively-the camera can write poetry." Harry Callahan was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan he went to the Michigan State University. Not long after he dropped out and began to teach himself photography in 1938 and later on 1946 he was invited to teach photography at the Institute of Design in Chicago. His work links to mine because these set of images are of the natural world like the trees. There isn't a massive link to what I'm doing but I can definitely use some of his ideas when making my final piece, like his use in trees. |
First Attempt:
What I've done for my first attempt was take a set of pictures of trees layered on top of each other to make collage. I'm actually quite pleased with the outcome of this because all the different branches take up the whole screen giving off quite a good effect. What may have made it look better if it was the same tree of different trees from the same angle so it matches together. I could also take a set of pictures every day of the same tree and watch its change as leaves fall off and leaves then sprout out of its branches. |
Second Attempt:
This is another attempt where I'm more experimenting with my original idea, but changed trees with leaves. I've used the same technique using photoshop to layer pictures of leaves onto of each other and changed the opacity so you can see each single picture as one. I took seven pictures of different sets of leaves whether they're on a branch, bush or just on the fall, then I've put them together making the collage. I might do another leave one but I'm thinking I'll stick with the tree idea because its more visible where is the leaves are more messy and harder to see, it does have quite a good effect though so its something to think about. |
For my next attempt I'm going to be putting these four images of trees and put them in a collage. I will then go and collect the leafs at the bottom of each tree and stick them onto the printed images of trees. Then it'll have the leaf taking up the all the branches, so the leaf is like the tree. I will print them small so they can all fit on A3 sheet with the leafs added onto the image.

Third Attempt:
I've taken four pictures of different trees and then collected the leaves at the bottom of the tree. Then I replaced the branches with the leaf, this links to Natural World because there are tree and leaves with are natural things.

Lee Pengelly
He takes pictures mostly based on natural landscapes, his pictures can link to mine because its natural world photos. I can link these is by overlapping loads of different landscapes that he took or ones that I could take. I could also take pictures of landscapes with lots of tree's which I can the put the leaves of those trees to cover them up in the picture. |
These are a set of pictures that I have taken to match what Lee Pengelly has done with his landscape photos. I've tried to include as many of the things I'm doing like trees, you can see in the top right picture that it has a landscape with a tree included. That picture I took also looks like the one Lee Pengelly took, the one in the bottom right.(above)

Experiment 1:
This is a little experiment I tried when I was around 13 years of age, where I took picture of my neighbours cherry tree from outside my window. The aim was to see how it changes from the green leaves in summer to the orange leaves of Autumn, and then the bare branches of the tree in winter.

I've mixed my experiment with what I'm planing on doing for my final piece. So I've layered up the changes in the tree trying to create an effect.
Experiment 2:
This time round I aimed to take pictures of the development in the cherry tree from Winter all the way through Spring. I choose to put in a slideshow this time round because I only managed to get four picture before the tree had rapidly blossomed. But the slideshow does give you a good look at how it starts off as bare branches and the explodes into this pink fluffy tree.

I've had another go this time with the other set of images, I really wanted to capture the explosion of colours but it was quite hard because it would overpower everything else.
I've made this picture by layering the four images of the cherry tree blossoming using Photoshop and changing the opacity so its easier to see the four images and the change in the tree.
Here I'm planning on layering all the images of the same tree just from different angles, so the tree doesn't move but the background does.
This is the final outcome of taking pictures of the same tree from different angles. The tree has quite a good effect looking like a spiders web, and if you look closely you can make out all the different backgrounds like the school, field and house on the street.
Idris Kahn
This is a good example of what I'm doing and you can see how he layers pictures up of different objects like trees similar to what I am doing and puts it in black and white. So his work is like what I'm doing just black and white without the theme of the natural world because there's all sorts of things like pylons. |
This is my go at an Idris Kahn styled picture where I have taken a picture of a tree from all angles like I have been doing but then put the black and white effect on the image. I also put the contrast up to try and get the image to stand out and be more visible.
