Spirals
The reason why I chose to pick spirals out of all the options because I instantly came up with possible ideas like light paintings and experimenting with that. But when I looked at the other ones I couldn't really see as many possibilities in them.
I will try and experiment with as many different types of spirals and different ideas like spirals in nature, spiral staircases and maybe using light paintings to create a spiral. The idea of spirals is based on Fibonacci idea of splitting the page up into spirals overall shaping it into spiral.

This is a page I've been working on in pinterest where I have collected pictures of spirals in all different types of places whether its in the wilderness likes trees or architecture like buildings or skyscrapers. It also has a picture of Fibonacci's idea of using up the space correctly by using a spiral.
These are some ideas I can experiment with like making a spiral using paint mixing them together and swirling the colours to make a spiral. I'm also going to make spirals using light paintings in different colours and different ideas like attaching the light to a string or attach it to a bike wheel and ride around. I'm going to try and make spirals in water like as it goes down the drain.
This is a good example of someones work based on doing big scaled light paintings, capturing things like sparks flying off in different directions creating a good effect. One thing that I want to take from it would be the sparks, like maybe using a sparkler and spinning it in a spiral.
Fibonacci idea of sequences.
His idea of using sequences goes up in numbers where the nth term is adding the two previous numbers together equalling the next number in the sequence. You can start to make squares with these widths and begin to make a spiral, an example of how this works is if you add 5 and 8 it equals 13 and then 8 add 13 equals 21, dividing the page up making a spiral. |

Image set 1:
This my first set of images made in the broadcast studio doing light paintings, the aim was to try and make spirals using coloured lights. I attached the lights to a string so as it spins round it captures a bigger circle and a more accurate one because its naturally spins in a circle. We made a few mistakes throughout the process none were major problems like at first we didn't have enough time to capture the light so the first spin would be almost instantly cut of, but it didn't take long to get that correct. Another small problem was the sting which loosened meaning that the light flew off out of the shot, it made quite a good effect but it wasn't what I was aiming for.
This is a photoshopped version of the spiral light were I've put three different images of circles getting smaller and smaller, with the aim of making a spiral with three different colours. There's room for improvement but as a first initial go its created an idea I can further develop or make better.

Man Ray
He produced major pieces of art and photography using Rayographs and the name Rayographs comes from Man Ray. Rayographs are all about the non exposure to light usually done in a dark room putting objects on the photographic paper capturing it like a picture does.
I'm planning to use the photographic paper and capture spirals using different objects shaped like a spiral. I'm hoping it'll create a good set of images that have a good effect overall showing how I'm experimenting with ideas.

This is a set of images I've made using photographic paper to make photograms using Man Ray's method, what I done was find lots of different spirally objects and put them in the image. The first image came out quite nicely but theres not allot to it so I tried adding other things to it like rope or necklace but i found it hard to shape it in a spiral. The second image worked quite well because I've added an extra object to make it more interesting but still got the spiral theme to the image.

Andy Goldsworthy
|
This an example of how photographers have the extreme patience and sometimes it often pays off but in the video there is an example of when it doesn't. What I can take from Andy Goldsworthy's work is the way he looks and makes spirals in nature, using things like leaves and twigs. This gives me another thing to experiment with spirals and something different I can do apart from light paintings.

The image shows a spiral of ice wrapped round a tree, and at first I did think it was fake but after watching one of Andy Goldsworthy's videos you see how he does it. If I had to describe this image to a person who could not see it I'd probably say how its a snowy forrest with a spiral icicle wrapping round a tree in a portrait image. Andy Goldsworthy has intelligently make a spiral using nature with the natural source of water being used, it's also something new where people haven't used nature for spirals before. He makes the sculpture by hand putting pieces of ice together to make a spiral surrounding the tree. He takes pictures of his work to document what he has done because he cant bring these sculptures to an exhibition, the picture is like a door to the sculpture. The only real equipment he needs to used would be a camera and tripod to get a steady image of the spiral sculpture. The image reminds me of when it's winter and on my way to school you see all these icicle hanging off bins and gutters. With all the snow in the picture it's quite bright and stands out nicely the theme is spirals and Andy Goldsworthy has got a good image based around spirals. I think this image is good because icicles don't usually shape in a spiral making it quite unique and different. The most interesting part of this image because it's allows you to question how Andy Goldsworthy has managed to make a spiral with ice without it falling apart. I'd name this picture spiracile because its bot a spiral and an icicle, I think he made this image because when he see's icicles he could experiment and make an spiral or shape with that.

This is a set of images I've taken of shells which I found around my house, there is a variety of colours and spirals which is what I was aiming for. I not too sure if I can use any of these for final piece but I'm overall trying to experiment with different things and see if they work, the spirals in the shells have worked well and it was interesting capturing all the different types of spirals in the shells. All these shells have been collected from me and my families travels, some are from journeys around the U.K but others are from all over the world like Greece and South Africa.
Image set 4:
With this set of images I decided to borrow one of the schools cameras for a weekend, with the idea of using things that I wouldn't be able to use in school. I started off with a torch just to make sure that I had all the settings right, once I done that I moved onto using the sparkler. I'm pleased with all the outcomes with the sparklers because you can make a spiral with this crazy effect with all the sparks flying off in different directions. We continued to experiment with different things like light colour and what pattern we should make when using the sparkler.
The next evening we went up to a near by car park with my bike and some lights attached to the wheels. We had quite a few go's experimenting with the bike idea in different locations and the outcomes were successful. We then took some pictures of cars going past on the motorway just to see what they looked like but they didn't really make spiral, so although they looked nice I cant really use them. We made some further experiments just spinning the wheel of the bike with another different coloured light making a spiral in the background which looked okay. Finally we went back into my garden and continued to develop my ideas on making spirals with the sparklers and just for a final mess around we had a go at writing my name.

This is an image I have edited using photoshop where I made three spirals with the sparkler in different areas, so there is multiple spirals. This was a initial experiment so what I'll aim to do next is even more spirals with sparklers or torches I try both, what I need to do to make this happen is find a bigger area so more spirals fit in.

Image set 5:
I had one more final go at the light paintings using the sparklers with the aim of using up all the space in my garden so I can edit them together so there are lots of spiral sparklers.
Final Piece 1:
This is my first final piece done using the dark room of two separate images. One of them is me sitting there the other is four different spirals which were done using two people with one light in each hand. It relates to my final piece because the light painting is in a spiral shape with me in the centre. I think the good things are that its quite clear and you can see everything going on in the image. It might look better if there was more colours or more spirals.
Final Piece 2:
This one is similar to the other one with the change of the spirals getting closer to the camera. This looks good because its like the light spirals are projecting out of the screen. It might have looked better if it was bigger because you could feel the effect of the spiral bursting out of the image.
Final Piece 3 :
This is a set of images that are based around spirals in nature and more specifically shells and it's good because all the different patterns are easily shown with the black and white effect.
Image Set 4 :
This is one of my light paintings using the the sparkler as the light source. I think this image is really good because the lines from the sparkler stand out so much. One thing that could be better would be the spiral shape to it which is slightly difficult to see.
Final Piece 5 :
This set of images was put together instead of being single photos because having two makes it that little bit more interesting. There's also an effect to help the sparkler stand out by making the background darker.
